What does wood damage look like?

For both wood (and concrete) damage,  the fix is cheap and easy- IF you catch it early.

How do you find wood damage?  Look throughout the interior and exterior, high, middle, and low all around for tell tale signs of the early stages of damage.  In other words, fix the problems when they first appear; when they are relatively minor.

It’s 100% guaranteed that wood damage will get worse and worse, and thus more and more costly with any of the following: paneling, trim, fascia-gutter joints, window frames exterior and interior, masonry, car port and lanai posts rotting at the bottoms, in attic wood damage, exterior roof shoulder and peak beams, interior termite damage –and on and on.  In Hawaii, it’s just a fact of life.

And to add insult to injury, so to speak, if you leave constantly water soaked beam ends, or any wood structure, it’s a welcome invitation for flying termites.  Yikes!  Same holds true for those big black carpenter bees looking for a friendly homeowner to drive nuts. And to make it worse, severe wood damage can leave openings for creepy crawlers like centipedes, ants, mosquitos, and, ugh rats!

We choose from from many different wood damage repair/replacement solutions; focusing on being honest about what is needed, what will work, what is most cost effective.

Perhaps we will use the two part epoxy solution, “sistering” (adding) additional wood support after fixing the damaged section.  We may remove and replace a severely damaged car port or lanai post if needed.  If the wood damage isn’t so severe,  just applying one of a dozen different type of caulks or sealants can do the trick.

This “buyer beware” law was established by the state  to protect consumers. The law has the correct presumption that bigger jobs require more expertise and legal and financial solidity-  which Licensed Contractors have to have in order to be licensed.

Because of scams targeting seniors in recent years, the Legislature and Regulated Industries Complaint Office (RICO) have now broadened the law to make it a Class B or C Felony to willfully evade the unlicensed contractor law.

For example, a  person can’t deceptively tell you, or advertise, they are licensed and only be referring to a Driver’s License or a G.E. Tax License to fool trusting or confused homeowners.

They can’t lie to you and evade the law by separating the labor and materials (i.e. $999 labor and then the amount of materials); or separating the work into different rooms (i.e. bathroom 1, bathroom 2, kitchen, deck, car port, etc.), or offer to not include state G.E. Tax if you pay in cash.

They can’t fraudulently show you a business card with a Licensed Contractor’s name and number, yet tell you to pay them instead of the contractor, especially in cash, often leaving customers ripped off and no way to track down the scammer.

I urge you to ALWAYS get the proposed scope of work, cost, payment terms, and the person’s true identity in writing.
