There is a legal limit of $1,000 for handyman work, above which, a contractor’s license is required.  Did you know this?

This “buyer beware” law was established by the state  to protect consumers. The law has the correct presumption that bigger jobs require more expertise and legal and financial solidity-  which Licensed Contractors have to have in order to be licensed.

Because of scams targeting seniors in recent years, the Legislature and Regulated Industries Complaint Office (RICO) have now broadened the law to make it a Class B or C Felony to willfully evade the unlicensed contractor law.

For example, a  person can’t deceptively tell you, or advertise, they are licensed and only be referring to a Driver’s License or a G.E. Tax License to fool trusting or confused homeowners.

They can’t lie to you and evade the law by separating the labor and materials (i.e. $999 labor and then the amount of materials); or separating the work into different rooms (i.e. bathroom 1, bathroom 2, kitchen, deck, car port, etc.), or offer to not include state G.E. Tax if you pay in cash.

They can’t fraudulently show you a business card with a Licensed Contractor’s name and number, yet tell you to pay them instead of the contractor, especially in cash, often leaving customers ripped off and no way to track down the scammer.

I urge you to ALWAYS get the proposed scope of work, cost, payment terms, and the person’s true identity in writing.

HPS licensed handyman services include termite and water damage for wood, inside and out. Particularly for repairing or rebuilding exterior decks and stairs, and damaged drywall. We also repair concrete cracks and spalling (flaking off of concrete) for CMU masonry  and tile block interior and exterior walls including tile block columns such as on car ports, retaining walls, concrete decks and steps.  We have experience in expanding concrete walkways and lanai patio decks, waterproofing,  painting, and much more.  

Minor plumbing and electrical removal and replacements are also offered, but for both handyman and contracting work, Licensed Plumbing and Electrical contractors are a mandatory necessity in many instances, such as in high rise condos.  We will tell you when this is the case.
